OUR PROJECT

In Febuary 2017, all of us at Team Buku are leaving Montreal and heading to Indonesia for a duration of 3 weeks. During those 3 weeks, we will be teaching english to underprivileged children at a local learning center in the small village of Tianyar, in North Bali.

Since Bali is one of the most touristic island of Indonesia, its economy revolves around tourism from people that come from all over the world. Therefore, learning english can make a huge difference in a child's future. It could make the difference between them living in serious poverty (extremeley low income, or no job at all) or living a comfortable life. As soon as we heard about this, we knew we had to try to help.

This is where we had an idea. Since we believe that learning a new language can be easier with the help of books, we decided that the main goal of this project will be to collect as many kids' books as possible, so they can be given away to the school in Tianyar. Many types of books such as storybooks, songbooks or activity books will be greatly useful to improving the childrens' knowledge of the english language.

"BUKU" is the indonesian word for book. Therefore, since our project is focused on their importance, we decided to give it that name.

Our second goal is to write our own little book aimed for children who have no knowledge of the language at all. This small book would be some sort of kids' bilangual dictionnary in which would be written multiple vocabulary words both in english and in indonesian. Each page would contain approximately 10 words on a specific theme that could be useful when starting to learn english. Some examples of themes that could be found in this book are numbers, colors, animals, seasons, time, school related objects, greetings and many more. For every vocabulary word there will be a small drawing that will have been hand drawn, digitezed, and redrawn with colors. With the money raised, we will print them out and donate them to the learning center in Tianyar.

Our third goal is to build shelves in which the books will be stored. For this to happen, we will spray-paint wooden crates in various bright colors (red, blue, yellow, green, orange). These will be brought to the center and left in a common area so that every child can have access to the books.

After talking about this with the school, they have decided that it would be a good idea for them to build a real library to store all of the books we will bring plus the ones they already have. They are currently working on finding the funds to build this, so our main focus we will be to collect books.

Finally, our fourth and last goal will be to mediatize our project. We will have multiple social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc...) and we will update them regularly during our project. We will try to post photos, videos, text updates, vlogs, and much more.

Also, we will film a short 10 minute documentary about our project and the importance of learning english at a young age in a country where tourism is the predominant industry that contributes the most to keeping a stable economy.

This video will be exculsive to anyone who donated 20$ or more to our Indiegogo campaign.
